Design of Experiments

On-Site Design of Experiments Workshop
Description

Learn how to make processes behave the way you want them to behave. Learn how to use classical Design of Experiments, Taguchi methods, and techniques popularized by Dorian Shainin to understand and control the sources of process variation.

Understand and control process variation

Objective:
This two-day workshop conducted at your facility for up to twenty people introduces participants to the fundamental concepts of Design of Experiments (DOE). The class uses both lecture and computer simulations to teach and reinforce understanding of experimental concepts. Statistical concepts are included, but the focus of the class is to provide a practical, working understanding. Classical DOE, Taguchi designs, and techniques popularized by Dorian Shainin are explored. At the conclusion of the class, participants will be able to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the three design concepts. They will be able to create a Prediction Equation for two-level designs. They will be able to determine if observed experimental data is statistically significant, and they will be able to evaluate experimental data to gain better insight and understanding of process variability. Participants will be prepared to begin using multi-variable experiments in their work and continue improving their knowledge of experimental design. To take the workshop's final exam, click here.

Who should attend?
This class is intended for engineers, technicians, and managers that want to improve manufacturing process performance. Participants should have a technical background and understand the basic concepts of a Normal Probability Distribution. Participants must have access to a Windows based PC or Laptop computer in order to solve problems during the workshop.

Outline (two days):
The workshop uses both lecture and computer simulations to introduce the concepts and tools used during engineering experiments.

  • Overview
  • Process Capability (Cpk)
  • Single vs. Muli-variable experiments
  • Full Factorial Designs
  • Prediction Equation
  • Analysis of Experimental Results
  • Sample Size and ANOVA
  • Fractional Factorials
  • Alias & Confounding
  • Three-level Designs
  • Taguchi Loss Function
  • Taguchi Lx Arrays and S/N Ratio
  • Variables Charts
  • Key Variables Identification

Class Material and Suggested Texts:
Participants must have access to a Windows based PC or Laptop computer in order to solve problems during the workshop. Each participant receives a workbook containing the required information to participate in the class. Textbooks are not required, but they are strongly encouraged. The class is based upon these texts:

Primary text:
Understanding Industrial Designed Experiments, 4th edition
by Stephen R. Schmidt and Robert G Launsby, Air Academy Press, Colorado Springs, CO, 1994.

Supporting texts:
World Class Quality, Second Edition, by Keki R. Bhote & Adi K. Bhote, AMACOM, New York, NY, 2000.
Introduction to Quality Engineering, by Genichi Taguchi, Asian Productivity Organization, 1986.
The Memory Jogger II, by Michael Brassard and Diane Ritter, GOAL/QPC, 1988.

About the Instructor:
Pete Babich developed and teaches the DOE Workshop. He has a Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering and has worked in quality management for over twenty years. He is an ASQ Certified Quality Manager and Certified Quality Engineer.

Cost:
The cost of a two-day on-site workshop is $6500 plus travel related expenses. For more information or to schedule a workshop, click here.
