President, Total Quality Engineering Inc
Founded TQE in 1991. Authored the Hoshin Handbook 1992. Developed and conducted over 100 Hoshin Kanri workshops. Developed and introduced Hoshin Planning software in 1994. Authored the Hoshin Handbook Second Edition in 1994. Developed and conducted over 20 Design of Experiment workshops. Developed and conducted over 50 Process Management and Improvement workshops. Developed web-based training for both the Hoshin Kanri and Process Management and Improvement workshops in 1998. Developed and introduced WebHoshin software in 2000. Authored the Hoshin Handbook Third Edition in 2005. Developed PCHoshin software and PMI Self Study Guide in 2007. Hoshin related products have developed into TQE's primary revenue generation source. Consulted with over 50 organizations to facilitate implementation of Hoshin Kanri.
1986 - 1991
Quality Manager, Hewlett-Packard, San Diego Division
Managed the quality function with over 125 people supporting a site of over 1600 people with annual sales of over $500M. Responsible for all of the classical quality function activities, and customer support activities. Report directly to the site General Manager. Major accomplishments include leading the site's efforts to implement Total Quality Management (TQM). Created a self audit tool that was used as a model for many other HP sites. Developed a competitive product analysis process that is best in class within HP and developed a process to measure customer satisfaction. Data obtained from the competitive analysis and customer satisfaction efforts was integrated into the Hoshin Plan to better define the strategies necessary achieve a sustainable competitive advantage for color printers and plotters. Also championed the use of Quality Function Deployment (QFD) and Taguchi concepts.
1979 - 1986
Engineering Assurance Manager, Hewlett-Packard, San Diego Division
Responsible for the Quality Function activities necessary to support new product development. Activities include Reliability Engineering, Regulations Engineering, Materials Engineering, and Environmental Test. Managed over 30 engineers and technicians. Major accomplishments include leading the site's efforts in achieving a 10:1 reliability improvement. Focus was on new product development and systematic root cause problem resolution prior to the product's release to manufacturing. Additional efforts included implementing the concepts of stress testing to accelerate the failure mode exposure. The concepts of STRIFE and BEST testing were pioneered at San Diego Division and have been implemented throughout HP. Additional work was done to improve supplier quality. By working with suppliers and selecting only those with the capability to assure their own quality, the number of suppliers was reduced by a factor of 5 with improved incoming component quality.
1974 - 1979
Development Engineer, Hewlett-Packard, San Diego Division
Responsible for electronic design on various strip chart recorders and printers. In addition, was involved with the development of the Thermal Printing process and print head reliability demonstration testing. This technology was the forerunner of today's Thermal Ink Jet technology.
1963 - 1970
Electronic Technician, US Navy
Responsible for operation and maintenance of various submarine radar, sonar, ECM, and navigation equipment. Served on USS Tench (SS417) and Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicle One (DSRV-1). Was also trained as a nuclear reactor operator.
